Cohesive Chemistry

Cohesive Chemistry is a digital resource platform to support teaching and learning in the IB Diploma Chemistry programme (first assessment 2025). The resources you will find here are designed for teachers of both SL and HL students and are free to use, adapt and share. I am slowly adding resources as I move through the course.
If you would like to subscribe to the Cohesive Chemistry newsletter (sent out weekly on Sunday), please add your email to this form.
I will include:
  • Updates on new resources
  • Strategies for improving teaching and learning in your classroom
  • Recommendations of external resources that I have found helpful.
This will not include any marketing or promotional material.

Why?

Simple, well-structured resources have greatly improved my effectiveness and efficiency as a teacher.

I hope by sharing them, they might do the same for others, particularly less-experienced chemistry teachers.

How?

These resources, primarily organised into Google Slide decks, are designed to act as a skeleton for teaching the new course.

I have tried to maintain a clear, consistent and concise format that can be used as a scaffold for good teacher explanations and checking for understanding.

What?

The slide decks will focus on:
  • individual subtopics
  • the internal assessment
  • Nature of science (NOS)
  • Theory of knowledge (TOK)
  • Core concepts (from my own thinking about the course)
Additional resources can also be found with the goal of improving teaching and learning in IB Chemistry.

Who?

This website and the attached resources are created and managed by Oliver Canning - a teacher of IB Chemistry and TOK Coordinator at TASIS England. I was a contributing author to the nature of science, nature of chemistry and international-mindedness sections of the new curriculum (and Teacher Support Materials) as well as co-authoring the newest edition of the Pearson SL and HL textbooks.
